Annual health exams and checkups can be a valuable tool in staying healthy. The more aware you are of potential and existing conditions, the more able you are to take steps to take care of those issues before they become serious. A comprehensive annual exam should include a physical exam, blood pressure check, height and weight check and several different lab tests. The lab work for annual check-up will depend on your age group, gender and your medical health history.

Blood Work for the Young

Starting in the adolescent years, patients may get blood work that looks at their hormone levels and other factors like sugar levels, cholesterol levels and others. Blood work might also be done to make sure that their thyroid is working correctly as well. Any of these issues can lead to potential health hazards that are easily correctable with the right medications. Certain people in this age group may also be asked to have other health factors monitored because they are at risk for certain diseases or conditions. Sexually active teens will also be tested for STDs.

There are a few important preventative tips for the young.In addition to trying to follow a healthy, balanced diet, teens should be encouraged to get at least a minimum amount of exercise each day and to get adequate sleep. Most teens are sleep deprived for four or more days per week according to studies.

Blood Work for the Adult

Adults should be getting their lab work during their annual exams to monitor their risk for health problems that range from diabetes to heart disease and more. Blood work should be drawn for cholesterol and sugar levels. Thyroid and liver functions should also be monitored with blood work. Anyone who is at serious risk, including people with a family history or those who are overweight may need to have this blood work done twice a year.

Adults need to consider several health tips. One is that weight control is important. Even losing five percent of your excess weight can lower your risk of certain diseases. Reduce salt and sugar in your diet as much as possible as well.

Blood Work for the Elderly

Older adults should be monitored closely, especially if they already have a health condition. Depending on the condition and its severity the doctor may suggest lab work on a more frequent basis.

The elderly should follow a few tips for preventing health problems. These include always following your doctor’s diet advice and take your medications as directed. Try to get some light to moderate exercise including strength training to protect your bones.
